Akira: Volume 1

9:13 am in Anime, Comics, Manga, Nerd Flix, Nerdtastic Books, Novels by elanna-markis

At 2:17 pm on December 6th, 1992, a new type of bomb exploded over the metropolitan area of Japan…”

If you know what this is from, you know what the new type of bomb was. Afterwards,  World War 3 ensued and Neo-Tokyo had to rebuild itself on a man-made island in the Tokyo Bay.

What I love about Akira is how Katsuhiro Otomo basically pioneered the use of unusual angles and incredibly detailed cityscapes and backgrounds in his manga. Yeah, dude. This was the guy that STARTED that.

In Akira, he constructs a world where political corruption and government inadequacy play a role in the destruction of Tokyo. He also creates a world where children are easily used as pawns in government schemes, no matter the cost. The counter to this threat in the manga is the revolutionary force represented by a girl named Kei and her brother. Their motivations during Volume 1 of the manga are. as of yet, unclear.

Bosozoku gang members Tetsuo Shuma & Shotaro Kaneda get tangled up in Neo-Tokyo’s political corruption when Tetsuo is injured in a motorcycle crash from almost hitting a child that looks like an old man– who also seems to have psychic abilities. This accident somehow awakens psychic abilities in Tetsuo, also, and this peaks the interests of a government organization that is involved somehow with the old-looking child, Takashi.

Compared to the manga, the film was also peak at it’s time of release in 1988. It’s definitely visually stunning. At least, to me! But I live on that hand-drawn, hand-animated stuff. In fact, some have said that Akira was what put anime on the modern-art map, if you will. Otomo used incredibly detailed scenes and unique angles that no one had ever used before in manga or anime.

I thought I was close to the end of the story when reading volume 1 since it follows the movie so well.. but much to my surprise, I found out there actually are FIVE MORE VOLUMES of Akira to go. The movie is DEFINITELY a shortened version of the manga. I can’t imagine what’s in store, and can’t wait to pick up volume 2.. whenever I happen to find it!

Top 5 favorite Bleach Shinigami Men

2:09 pm in Anime, Featured, Nerd Flix by Bankai Hottie

I picked my top 5 favorite Bleach shinigami men mainly due to how hot they are.  I also love the way these 5 guys fight and what they fight for.

Renji Abarai is the lieutenant of the 6th Division in the 13 court guard squads under captain Byakuya Kuchiki.  He is very cocky and always willing to fight for what he believes in.  I love his long red hair and tribal tattoos.  One of my favorite Renji fights is episode 52, Renji vs. Captain Kuchiki.

Byakuya Kuchiki is the captain of the 6th Division in the 13 court guard squads.  It is hard for me to choose a favorite episode featuring Byakuya Kuchiki, I like most of his fights.  Probably my favorite is episode 197 & 198. In these episodes Byakuya saves his sister Rukia once again by fighting Zommari Rureaux, the 7th Espada.  I also love his heart to heart with Rukia in episode 62.

Ichigo Kurosaki is a human who becomes the substitute soul reaper of Karakura Town.  He is very short-tempered, strong-willed and impulsive.  I love that he always fights for what he believes to be right and the people he cares about. Some of my favorite episodes are # 59 Ichigo vs. Captain Kuchiki and 272 Ichigo vs. Ulquiorra.

Shuhei Hisagi is the lieutenant of the 9th Division in the 13 court guard squads under former captain Kaname Tosen.  He is a very mature and calm person.  I like that when he fights he is calm, quiet, and focused.  I love his face and his stare.  Even though he despises his zanpaktuo, Kazeshini, I think it is really cool and he is very good at using it.  My favorite episode is 219 when he fights and defeats Findor, one of the 2nd Espada’s fraccion. I also like episode  260, in which he battles against his zanpaktuo, Kazeshini for control over his materialized form.

Toshiro Hitsugaya is the captain of the 10th Division in the 13 court guard squads.  He is the youngest captain ever. He is usually very serious and mature. One of my favorite episodes is #274-275 Captain Hitsugaya vs. Harribel, 3rd Espada.

Anime Review :The Main Naruto Teams

10:03 am in Anime, Featured, Nerd Flix by Nerd Girl

Total episodes: 220
Year Published: 2002
Director: Date Isato
Original Creator: Kishimoto
Anime complete? Yes though continues with Naurto Shippuden
Nerdy rating 10/10

Naurto is one of my favorite anime I started watching it about two years ago when my brother introduced me to it. I found that the never give up attitude of Naurto is inspiring as well as fun to watch. You are always left with a good feeling. Naurto over the years has progressed and developed into a world wide phenomenon with it movies and video games. Naurto Shippuden is after Naurto but for the context of this post I will be talking solely about Naurto. There are four main teams on the show with 3 Genin ( new ninja) and 1 Jonin ( experinced ninja), the main teams are as follows:

Team 7

Kakashi Hatake: Jonin, lighning type, poseses siringen
Nick Name: Copy Ninja
He is the son of the White Fang of Kahona, Kakashi has a very laid back additude and likes to read his “adult only” books. He is always late to every appointment with the kids. He likes to keep them waiting and then tells a ridiculous  story about why he is late. Kakashi has flunked all other Genin that he was suposed to teach, as they all failed his test.  Being the only kids to ever pass they are looked as as exceptional Genin to watch for the future.

Sakura Haruna: Genin, unknown type at this time in anime
She is the only girl on this team which, of course, creates problems. In Naurto she does not do to much in the way of fighting. She  just cries a lot and tries to “hook up” with Saske and ignore Naruto, who actually likes her. Sakura has nothing remarkable about her in Naruto but in Shippuden she will have a better part.

Saske Uchiha: Genin, lighning type
Saske is the cool bad boy character in this anime. He is the only living surviver of his clan with the exception of his brother, who killed the rest of the family. He is out for revenge against his brother and will do anything he deams necessary to achieve that goal. Naurto looks up to Saske as a rival/friend. Someone that he can try to beat. But much to Naurto’s dismay, Saske is always one step ahead of him.

Naurto Uzumaki: Genin, wind type
The main caricter that the anime was named after he is a goffie kid that just wants to be anolaged by his village. Naruto has come to the conclusion that to get the village to anoage him he needs to become Hokage( the top Ninja) as a babe the Fourth Hokage traped a daemon Fox in Naurto to save the village wich has given Naurto more chacra than most and extra powers that he must learn to control or risk destoying the village and his friends He has a never give up attitude that will have you rooting for him till the end.

Team 8

Kureni Yuhi: Jonin you don’t get to see her to much in Naurto she is just kind of there they go into more details about here in Supuuden.

Hinita Hyuga: Genin. Ahhh sweet hinita she is very shy and timid in this series the next leader of the Hyuga clan. Has a crush on Naurto but wont tell him whenever he is around she can’t say any thing from being so shy.

Kiba Inuzuke: Genin. Kiba is a tough and rowdy ninja his clan fights with ninja dogs at there side they live, sleep and raise the dogs from pups to help them fight.

Shino Aburame: Genin. Shino is kinda a creepy ninja he always has his face mostly covered, his clan fights with bugs. They live on the ninja feeding on there Chakara and doing there bidding in exchange. you don’t want to meet him in a dark ally.

Team 9

Sensei Might Guy: Jonin, where to start Guy sensei is your comic relief he is so over the top in any thing he does. and makes every thing a challenge just a simple trip to a ramen shop would entail walking backwards on his hands with 1oo pound weights on his arms and legs just the kind of man he is.

Hyuuga Neji : genin, neji is Hinatas’s cousin, part of the Hyuuga family that is sworn to portect the head family Neji resents this and thinks he is better than Hinata and tries to beat her in all things succeeding most times because of her timid personality. he is shown as a cool guy

Rock Lee : genin Pock lee to put it short see Guy Sensei he idolizes him and wants to be just like him. Rock lee is very good at doing just that he is a natural at Drunken boxing and they use that when he is in a big fight.

Ten Ten : genin, master of all weapons has all of scrolls on her at all times and you never know what weapon she will be pulling out next your basic tomboy

Team 10

Asuma Sarutobi: Jonin, Wind Type just one cool man is all I can say is also a wind type and helps Naurto to learn wind tachniques. in love with Kureni Yuhi but he wont tell her yet.

Ino Yamanaka: Genin Ino is Sakura’s rival her family specializes in a take over jutsu that lets them take over the enemy’s mind and make them do what they want. She is very prissy and worry about her looks allot.

Shikamaru Nara: Genin lets just say it’s to bothersome to write about him…. sigh ok. He does not want to do any thing that is considered work as it is to bothersome. He comes from a long line of shadow users they can manipulate there shadows do do things grab enemy’s for example. He is a master tactician and his plans never fail. best friend is choji

: Genin Choji family uses body transformations to beat the enemy’s making various parts of the body huge. He always has a bag of chips with him and always munching on them. His best friend is Shikamaru. has vast amount of chakara hence why he eats so much its storage he says.

7:01 am in Anime, Manga, Nerd Flix, Nerd Life, Novels by damaster

Here we are with yet another Vampire Anime, this one is about 2 *Brothers* and what they must do in order to survive as *Black Bloods* (meaning that they are old, essentially)… But there is a catch…you see the younger one Kotaro is actually Alice… the one that created Jiro the older brother!? And it’s Jiro’s job to protect his bloodline at all costs…but how far does that mean he must go? And what problems can arise from watching over such a young kid, after-all curiosity killed the cat…but what about the undead?

This series is all around short, 1 volume of manga and 1 season of anime, but its really nice to watch, so i give it a 8/10 Rating. Jiro wields his sword like a true master, and as his opponents get tougher you will see the skills he exerts and the powers he possesses. But after living for so long the past is bound to catch up to you, the question is….can Jiro handle the mistakes he made in the past, or will it fall through again leaving the world in turmoil? Enjoy this anime and get back to me next week for another great anime!

Anime Monday: Hellsing

10:03 pm in Anime, Nerd Flix by damaster

Its MONDAY! And here i am giving you another great anime, this one is called Hellsing. It is about vampires, Hellsing being one of the old ones, and his job to exterminate his own kind!? This anime series is only 1 season long but there are some great OVAs that follow the manga really well! Hellsing has a lot of interesting characters that just come out of the wood work…(or shadows) and keep you on the edge of your seat with the crazy gun slinging and *DEATH* defying stunts! Ever seen a psychotic paladin running around with bayonets trying to purge the world of all undead? Well you will if you watch this, along with some other unsavory characters with attitudes to match.

This anime is really good to watch, with a rating of 8/10 and some REALLY big guns its sure to entertain and don’t get too attached to the girl… she is quite dangerous… so watch your back! There is a bit of blood/gore in this anime as well so keep the kids from watchin it, but don’t forget to enjoy this wonderful anime. See ya next Monday!

Anime Monday: Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple

4:14 am in Anime, Nerd Flix by damaster

Overall Nerd Rating 10/10 (EVERY nerd loves Martial Arts!)

Well, here we are again its Monday, and that means I have another great anime for everyone to enjoy! For this week, i bring to you History’s Strongest Disciple: Kenichi. This anime is about a boy named Shirahama Kenichi. He is what most would consider to be a rather worthless individual. Possessing no talent for fighting, looks, athletic, or academic ability… so now you are probably wondering this….How is he supposed to be the Strongest Disciple??? Well that is simple, journey through the Hellish training of Ryouzanpaku, and you will either die or get very strong!

This anime is a lot of fun to watch because of the situations he constantly finds himself in and with an overall good storyline whats not to like! You get to learn a little martial arts, laugh at the jaunts of his masters, check out the girls as they fight both other people and over Kenichi! So now the question arises….what would you do to become stronger? Do you think YOU have what it takes to survive the training at Ryouzanpaku!? Well I invite you to try your best, and don’t forget…Mui is a great cheerleader!
