PlayStation Move Review

5:37 pm in Featured, Modern Games by Guest Nerd

Playstation Move

The enormous success of the Nintendo Wii made it clear that consumers are ready to get up off the couch and enjoy a more active approach to video games. Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony have long been the kings of the gaming market so it comes as no surprise that Sony and Microsoft weren’t far behind Nintendo with their own motion controlled systems. While it is debatable whether Sony’s PlayStation Move will find its way to the top of the market, it is certainly going to be a contender.

Playstation Move Pricing

Cost of the PlayStation Move will vary depending on what you already have. If you’re starting from scratch, then the most logical option will cost you $399, and that includes a 320GB PS3 Starter Bundle (more on this in a second) and a motion controller officially called the DualShock 3 pad. The Starter Bundle includes the motion controller, required PlayStation Eye camera, and the Sports Champions game. The Starter Bundle goes for just under $100 and is probably the smartest choice if you already have a PS3. All of these items can be purchased separately but bundles will save you money. Sony has also released an alternative control listed at $30 but it is not interchangeable with the motion controller and only a small selection of games enables the use of both simultaneously.

Playstation Move Hardware

Motion controlled gaming requires the PlayStation Eye camera, the PlayStation 3 itself, and the handheld controllers mentioned above. The Eye and PS3 have been on the market for some time now. The controllers are very comfortable and, other than the  45-degree counter-clockwise twist of the command buttons, simple to use (even that feature won’t give you too much of a problem). Each controller is wireless and has the four symbol buttons that will be familiar to anyone who has ever used PlayStation products. A t button is on the underside of the controller and the butt houses two ports: one for charging/syncing and an extension connector. Motion tracking is on par with the competition and initial calibration isn’t too much of a hassle.

Playstation Move Games

While Move’s pricing or hardware doesn’t disappoint, it doesn’t blow the competition out of the water either. Because of this, the success of Move will depend largely on games made available and their playability. Its initial lineup seems to be a positive sign. Move’s flagship title, Sports Champions, is a collection of six sports: Disc Golf, Gladiator Duel, Beach Volleyball, Archery, Table Tennis, and Bocce. Sports Champions can be compared favorably to Nintendo’s Wii Sports and Microsoft’s Kinect Sports. The gameplay seems to improve on the Wii, particularly with table tennis. Other  titles include SOCOM 4, Tiger Woods 2011, R.U.S.E., and Heavy Rain. If the quality of gameplay and apparent commitment to market a wide variety of titles remain consistent, Move will remain a major force in the motion controlled video game industry.

Sustainable Gaming 1 of 2 Economic Sustainability

6:05 am in Featured, Modern Games by Don Andy

Sustainable GamingWe all love gaming, so we all want this favoured past time of ours to continue into the future. It can only continue by the ongoing investment of publishers who hope to recoup this initial outlay at the time of release. Sales of new games would traditionally be the only return the publishers make and with more and more retailers giving an increased shelf space to pre-owned titles it has required the industry to be clever and consider new ways of thinking.

In many ways, the video games industry has tried to emulate the other forms of entertainment in the way it hopes to make a return on the investment. This business model has its faults and as the games industry has developed to more than just the whiny younger brother of the two more established mediums, striving for attention, the whole system needs to be re-evaluated.

It’s well documented that as new generations of consoles come out, the cost of developing games for these consoles is increased, this in turn puts more pressure onto the developers and designers as the publishers have to put much more than their neck on the line. We have started to see a new take on continual returns with DLC, micro-transactions and the less than ideal “project ten dollar” by EA. But it all highlights the direction the industry needs to head in order to escape the heavily saturated physical media market.

Being able to create on-going revenues, the developers can once again start to take the reigns by being able to reinvest into future projects and the ongoing funding from the previous titles will therefore help to shift the power back to developers and once again allow them to spend the money developing games how they want to develop them.

The good thing is, not much is going to change. The development of games isn’t going to nosedive on quality as a sub-par game will still receive sub-par reviews, the impetus still remains firmly with the consumer.

The new forms of digital distribution with Gaikai and On-live will sure test the limits of the consumer and will be a good starting point into what new models can be adapted, and most importantly, will be accepted. If these new consoles start to see a great success with the model of digital distribution, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the consoles streamlining their attempts to create a more digital market.

There are many underlying factors when it comes to implementing developments in the console industry with more politics, hissy fits and backstabbing than you may realise. The great thing about this industry is the power of the consumer, great games succeed, as people start to realise the benefits of digital distribution and companies don’t just use it as a money grabbing technique (*cough* EA *cough*) we will start to see a re-balance of power and a fruitful future for developers.

Borderlands: A Very Late Review

5:04 pm in Modern Games by Dave

Do you like shootin’ games? Do you like hording games? Do you like DLC as well?

Then you will like Borderlands. Let me explain why, before I actually discuss the game mechanics.

1) The game has been out for over a year now. I have been playing it since then.  The age of the game means it will be in the discounted sections at your local vidya game store.  I scored my copy and the subsequent dlc’s for $60, which is about what it would have bought to score it new or to to buy the Game of the Year edition equally new. Either way, you get what you want for a nice penny.

2) Multiplayer. You can play with your kill stealing, loot mongling, do-my-own-thing friends (well, three of them anyway) in a very nice world where 12 yr olds won’t belittle you about being a noob and won’t be confused when you start talking about blast processing. I digress. Playing with close friends. Good.

3) The nerd references. Yes, this game is littered with them. Because there are almost a million “unique” weapons in the game, the designers went a little wacky. Ghostbusters, Robocop, even TF2. To be honest, the game is even a parody of Fallout, but with Diablo mechanics. There’s even hidden messages in binary, and a nice bragging right to find the hidden fish on every board.

Now, some back story. Borderlands was looking like another me-too post apocalyptic shooter until they drastically overhauled the game to look more concept-art in appearance. Unfortunately, the story was sacrificed for with this endeavor ( the game was 90% done when they decided to redo it) and the lead artist left (you can see her pictures in the game as a missing person). The DLC covers up the lack of main game story tremendously.

What was that about a million guns? Oh yeah. There are a lot of guns. Before you have a joygasm, you should know: the guns aren’t really aesthetically different from others of the same. Shotguns look like other shotguns of the same brands, minus a few or add a few things. But their individual stats are very different.  Is this some sort of cheap marketing ploy? Maybe. You’ll find yourself rationalizing why to get rid of a pistol that does 200 damage and another that does 200 but has a scope. Plus, nerd references abound with their names.

I’m getting windy, so let me go through the DLCs:

Dr. Ned’s Zombie Island – zombies, zombies, shotguns. Repeat.  Worth it, but the story is pretty transparent.
Moxxie’s Underdome Riot- it’s a shameful introduction of a character for another DLC, and a bank…and an arena. Worth it for the bank.
General Knoxx’s Secret Armory: This is the bread and butter of the DLCs. Enjoy driving, cuz there’s a lot of it.
Clap-Trap (sic)’s Robot Revolution: This beats General Knoxx with his own dismembered arm. But it was shooooorrt.

Also, Gearbox has said twice now that they are done making DLCs and updates for the game. Then again, they lied the first time they told us this.

Still not satisfied? The game is easy to modify. Yes. You can modify your equipment to have an infinite shield or Deux Ex Machina of a weapon. Do I condone this? No. But I’ve seen some people make some insane mods. So whatevs.

How many donkeys does this show get? There could have been a better main story, there could be better enemy AI, and there could have been more missions in some of the DLCs…but I give it Three and a calf/Five Guatemalan Pack Mules. So I guess that means you should try it.

The Magic Box

11:24 pm in Games & Toys, Modern Games, Nerd Life, Video Game Tips & Tricks by G Watson

There were no crowds queueing Time Square waiting for some midnight release,  not much media coverage, but a major step in video game consoles was released today.  This black sheep of the gaming community is known as OnLive, and it’s console is simply called the “MicroConsole”.  If you have never heard of OnLive or it’s console you may wonder what makes it so special.  It has no fancy or expensive hardware, no opening ports for game disks nor cartridges.

The how does it work?  The magic power of the Internet.  The hardware and games are hosted in a server farm by OnLive and a stream of the game is broadcast like a television signal to your computer or the console.

The service officially started June 15th of this year for PCs and Macs with some of the best AAA and indie games of the year.

I happen to get one of the first shipments of the MicroConsole and spent the day playing and testing it out.  It works just as well as it did on my PC with no major problems.  Although it does not come with a wireless adapter yet, I manage to bridge my netbook to  act as wireless adapter and it works perfectly.

It comes with one wireless controller, which is a variation of an Xbox 360, where the D-pad and left thumb stick are  switched and a row of video controls for brag clip and in the future for when they release movies or possibly Netflix on the system.

The MicroConsole has the ability to connect up to four OnLive wireless controllers and two USB ports that work easily with any Xbox 360 controller(wireless if you have an adapter)  Also there is the ability to hook up a usb keyboard and mouse if your a die hard PC gamer.  It even worked with my Razer Naga, even though only the 3 main mouse buttons worked.

OnLive has some downsides and an unfair share of criticism. The service requires at least a stable 3Mbps internet connection for uninterrupted gameplay.  The game selection is slim, made worse by the fact a deal with EA games went sour.  The worst is an image problem that OnLive  was a scam and it wasn’t technically possible long before the service came out.  This negative image lead the company to believe that it could not survive without a charging a monthly service fee that added to the problems.

However with a successful launch that help dropped the monthly fee and delivering almost everything they promised is making the image problems go away.

The OnLive Micro-Console is available at their website for $99 including a free game.  There is no retail option, and no option to buy extra controllers and as mentioned above no wireless adapter yet.

Also announced this week is a Playpack Pass, a $10 monthly fee that lets you play all you want for a select number of older games.  They are hoping to release more games for that service to a total of 40 games by the end of January.  All Micro-console owners have free access to this service until January 14.

Of course OnLive is free to sign up for any try out on your PC or Mac and every game lets you play the first 30 minutes absolutely free.

Review:

This game is the best side-scrolling game I have ever played, hands down! I would say it’s a fighting/action/rpg like Gauntlet Legends . As you play the game you gain XP to level, and increase your skills which are strength magic defense and agility. Strength increases how much damage you do. Magic gives you new magical abilities, increases your mana, lengthens your magic distance, and increases magical damage. Defense makes you take less damage and increases your HP. Agility accelerates your movement speed, and how fast you can shoot arrows. The enemies drop  money, items, weapons and animal orbs which help you immensely throughout the game. As you level your character you will gain new moves at certain levels to entertain you throughout the whole game. This game keeps you laughing throughout. If it’s not a crapping deer, a boss jumping in the lava or the ice boss the slowly freezing while screaming in agony after you defeat him.

Animation & Sound:

The graphics of Castle Crashers is just amazing! This game was entirely made by Newgrounds the same developers that made the epic game Alien Hominid!!I love the cartoon style graphics with all the bloody goodness (yes you can turn off the blood, but why would you want too). The music in Castle Crashers is the kind of music you can listen to over and over again. Actually, I go to the Castle Crashers icon on the PS3 all the time just to hear it the song. The game has its own friggin soundtrack for Gods sake! If you have played this game and don’t own the soundtrack you’re a stronger person then I.

If you have ever played this game and have anything to add, please comment!!

Tips & Tricks:

These are just a few tips and tricks I have found though my many hours of playing Castle Crashers.

Infinite Money:

In the desert level where the alien ship beams you up at the end, before you fight a bunch of smaller ships that drop Alien Hominids. Here’s what you need to do, just don’t attack the ships. When you don’t attack the ships they never stop dropping Alien Hominids. Now you just need to get 1P on each side to kill the Alien Hominids as they drop. The great thing about Alien Hominids is that they drop all sorts or gems, coins, bags of gold and food. The player that needs money grabs the loot.

Infinite XP:

In the lava world, you come to a point where you need to eat a sandwich to go any further. The guys you fight there drop them when you slay them to you just don’t eat one. Just camp there to gain all the XP you like. This works best with lower levels. Higher levels can just go to insane mode slay the troll boss at the end of thieves forest . Happy XPing

Story Line Items:

Compass: Find to the left of the blacksmith.

Ship Wheel: At the end of the lava level after defeating the dragons.

Telescope: Grab this item at the end of the Industrial Castle level.

Treasure Map: You’ll receive this after defeating an opposing team at the sand castle, in a game of volleyball.

Useful items:

Boomerang: Equip the Cardinal Animal Orb, and go to the Thief Forest. When you locate the owl pooping from a tree, the cardinal will find the boomerang.

Bow and Arrow: In the Thief Forest level, they are dropped randomly.

Horn: Will receive after killing the Corn boss.

Key Weapon: Equip the Cardinal Animal Orb, and go the Full Moon level. When you reach the mountain path, go up until you reach the second hut, and Cardinal will locate Key Weapon for you.

Spade: Head to the first desert level after you’ve completed the ship level. Leave the ship and find this item right in front of you on the left side of the sand castle.

Arrow= Erunak Stonespeaker Yellow dot= Goven Gray Green dot= Captin Anton Blue dots= Doom Sayers Purple dot=King Wrynn

This is a quick run through of the new pre Cataclysm quests that are occurring in Stormwind. You receive different exp and money according to your level. I did it on a level 80 so that is what I put up. It is a great way to make some fast cash, my total: 100 gold 52 silver. Lower levels get very good exp and it is easy,  just a lot of running.

The Wildhammer: to pick up, talk to Erunak Stonespeaker. You will find him by the Stormwind bank. Then you need to go and talk to Gaven Grayfeather, he is in the Stormwind keep in the throne room. Rewards: At lvl 80: 1 gold 32 silver

Erunak Stonespeaker

Prophecies of doom: to complete, talk to Captain Anton he is in the hallway of the Stormwind keep, on the right as you go in about halfway up. Then go to Old Town and grab a pamphlet from each of the three doomsayers: “Elemental fire for the soul,” “What does the end of all things mean for me?,” and “Finding security and comfort in a doomed world.” While you’re there pause and listen to one of them finish. Rewards: At lvl 80:  13 gold 23 silver

Red= doomsayer outfit

Black= Doomsayer

blue= pamphlet

Signs of the Times: to complete, you will need to run around the channel area and place signs to warn of the cult. You can see where to place the signs by a bobbing blue arrow, they are small so look carefully. Place five signs and return to Anton. Rewards: At lvl 80: 13 gold 23 silver

Blue Arrow

Infiltrating the cult: go to a doomsayer in Old Town and next to them you will find a box, click on it and receive your outfit. Put it on and go to Mirror Lake, it is north east of Stormwind. Talk to Sylandra Overseer Rewards At lvl 80: 6 gold 63 silver

The Missing: do this quest while you are at mirror lake and do not turn in till you have done all the quests there as you will be going back to the same turn in location for both. You need to talk to the missing family members and tell them that there families miss them and want them to come home. The locations are as follows Cultist Lethelyn is in the house by Sylandra. Cultist Ortunn is behind the house by the table. Cultist Wyman is in the tent by Mirror lake west of Mirror Orchard. Cultist Kaima is next to  Mirror Orchard by the wagon. Rewards At lvl 80: 13 gold 23 silver

red dot-Cultist Wyman

white dot-Cultist Kaima

green dot-Cultist Lethelyn

blue dot-Cultist Ortunn

black dot-Sylandra Overseer

yellow dot- Alter

Spreading the Word: You equip your doomsday message and run by places and Spread the word. I recommend doing it in this order  go southwest to Westbrook, make sure you are in the middle of the road when you say your message. Then go west to Gold Shire run down middle of road till again you say your message and then head north to Stormwind run up to the back of the Valley of the Heroes or until you receive your message. Return to Sylandra by Mirror lake. Rewards At lvl 80: 13 gold 23 silver

The Masters plan: listen at the alter to the image of Gho’Gall, it is behind the house you can’t miss it just wait there until the cultists gather and summon him. Rewards At lvl 80: 13 gold 23 silver

The Doomsday plan: take the elemental devices to Captain Anton in the Stormwind keep. This is where you will also turn in The Missing.  Rewards At lvl 80: 9 gold 93 silver

Thwarting Twilight’s Hammer: Destroy the elemental devices to release the captive elementals and defeat five of them. You will find these through out Stormwind I think they are easiest to find in the channels but that is just a personal opinion. The devices you will see are rotating glass spears with end caps of square metal. The elementals are level appropriate so don’t worry. Rewards At lvl 80: 13 gold 23 silver

Elemental Device

Fighting The Elementles

Warn King Wrynn: Just as it says, you need to go up the hallway to the throne room to speak to the King. Talk to him and he tells you how great you are to everyone. Quests are complete. Rewards at lvl 80: 13 gold 23 silver
