Der Nerdery

My first thought when I saw this was that Doritos shouldn’t have even bothered trying to do barbecue. When I opened the bag, I thought I was right because it smelled horrible. Imagine my surprise that these chips had a nice and sweet hickory taste to it which I thought fit the name “Tailgater BBQ” very well.

What I know Doritos for the best is the flavoring, and they didn’t cut back on that. Each chip had the perfect amount of powdery goodness, as always. They did, however, skimp on the intensity of the flavor. It was definitely too subtle for barbecue. It’s seemed like the type of ‘I want some spice with my sugar’ situation. After eating about half of the bag (these chips are very addicting), the flavor is suddenly edgier and more noticeable. Unfortunately, I find that these still aren’t the best barbecue chips out there. (So far, that title belongs to Lays Barbecue.)

Despite the flavor issues at the beginning of the bag, Tailgater BBQ definitely makes it into my tops for barbecue chips. The good outweighs the bad. Would I buy this again? Definitely.
