Rival Schools isn’t a story I followed, and I didn’t ever see a show about it. However Big “C”, U-Turn, and I did spent countless hours beating each other senseless on this game. Big “C” found it by accident in a game store. It is a 3 dimentional fighter similar to the early tekken, battle arena toshinden, or virtual fighter series. Your characters are representative of school activites. There are your classic sports characters ranging from soccer, to volleyball, to baseball, even kendo. You don’t have to use a sports character though, you could use a science nerd, a sexy secretary, or even a buff ass principal. As a fighting game looney, I found this one well made for its time, and am sincere when I say there are many great fights to be had utilizing the tag system the game uses.
The game engine lets you sidestep, jump rediculously high allowing for monster air combos, and each character has street fighter-esque ranged moves to use, along with a set of specials that are appropriate to their role in the school. The baseball player can launch you across the screen with a huge bat, the principal can bitch slap you with her notebook, or the nerd can electrocute you through the ground. So if you are looking for a 3D old school fighter from the early days, give rival schools a chance. It is a bit hard to find anymore, as I got lucky and found mine online for 30 dollars. Usually they run around 50-60 bucks, so good hunting nerds.

Project Justice (RS2 in Japan) was superior in my opinion.
